Be warned, this is beta stuff and we haven't been able to test it ourselves. However, a number of breathless tipsers and commenters are reporting a successful jailbreak and unlock of their iPhone 3GS. The magic begins with a 3GS jailbreak released by GeoHot. See, George is fed up with the Dev-Team's insistence on waiting until Apple releases 3.1. As he puts it:

iPhone dev team finally released one of most awaited tool, yellowsn0w.iPhone Dev team managed to crack latest iPhone 3G baseband 02.28.00 and its surprising that yellowsn0w will now only work with iPhone 3G Firmware 2.2 Baseband 02.28.00 which is contradictory to their prior Message .Their is no news from Dev-Team about making Yellowsn0w to work with Baseband 02.11.07. Many users are facing issue while Unlocking iPhone 3G 2.2 with Yellowsn0w.

You do need to have the latest 2.2 firmware installed and jailbreak it first before you can proceed with the unlock, but after you’ve done that, simply install the app via Cydia/Installer, return to the Cydia Main Menu, reboot with the new SIM inserted , wait for 10-15 seconds before sliding to unlock, and that’s it, your’re done! However, do note that this is still a beta version so don’t be surprised if you hit some bumps along the way. PIN support is not available yet so you better disable PIN request on your SIM before proceeding. With that being said and you’re more than ready to give this unlock a try, you can find Yellowsnow at the following locations:

Cydia: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
Installer: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
